These days any company that is worth it’s salt has to be on Twitter. There isn’t a media or news outlet alive that doesn’t have some presence on the 140 character website. Without it you would be failing. Whether it be great resources like KISS Insights or whether it be programs like Tweet Deck, the answer is the same: get on Twitter or be left behind.
Of course being a twitter has changed the game of journalism for many news outlets. These days your need to get news out first is higher than ever before. Your twitter fans are going to click on the company that tweets the breaking news first. You have to remember that it’s not about who is reporting it these days(as much as it should be) but who is getting it out first.
What this is all causing the media outlets to do is to have to get out news that they may not be 100% confident on but they have to do it in the name being first. This has led to many outlets that have reported erroneous reports and have ended up looking like a hack journalism outlet. Companies are having to look themselves in the mirror and figure out if they can stand to lose some reads for the sake of their own credibility. It’s a tougher decision than they imagined and the decision will only get tougher. Journalists are learning that while they need to get things out fast they need to be sure they are right
